This is about natural selection, or evolution. I’ve told you in previous posts that I’m no expert on most things, but I have opinions. These are more of those.

The way it works is this. Suppose that you’re a girl and you’re young (or young enough to still have the ability to procreate), when choosing potential prospects, you drift toward traits that are attractive to you. You may not be aware the influence of your subconscious but it strongly influences you. There are certain qualities that you find attractive in a potential mate. It may be visual appeal, it may be financial expertise, it may be intellectual attraction. Whatever the draw, that’s whom you choose.

Let’s narrow down to visual appeal for the sake of the argument, but the same is true for whichever attraction you’d like to choose. Your choices, in this narrow example, are a 6’ 2” modest professional athlete earning at the top of his profession or a (whatever height you choose) grumpy man with bad physical habits and poor personal hygiene. Which would you choose? Likely 9 out of ten of you would choose the athlete. No problem, but, look who’s genes get passed along.

That’s natural selection. Now, multiply that by 10,000 generations. Look whose genes get passed along.

Now, I’ve shown that there are many criteria by which to choose. Some will choose this and others will choose that. That’s how humans are related to other primates. At some point in millions of years of generations passing by, different attractive qualities caused splits in how the genes were passed down to future generations.

Going back 3 paragraphs, let’s say that there’s a group who prefer intellectual excellence and another group who prefer physical prowess. From there, certain genes would be left behind and others promoted. Now multiply by 1,000,000 generations. In that time the two groups would grow increasingly different and by the end of that arbitrary period the two groups would have radically different appearances, strengths, different lifestyles and so on.

Eventually, by choosing different climates or environments to live in, different physical changes would occur. Maybe the body would create a fat layer for protection, like whales. Maybe the torso would increase by volume to increase power abilities, like the gorilla. As these changes occur, it will always be the more successful of that group to have their genes move forward. Then this group will choose new sets of desirable qualities and new offshoots are created. In the long run, undesirable qualities will be left behind because those displaying those qualities will not find partners who want to reproduce with them.

That’s evolution. It’s not magic. It’s you choosing who you want to make babies with and pass on those genes. Lots of people are choosing partners for the same reason you did. It’s not magic, it’s the biggest popularity contest in history.
